The Scarlet Witch's son, Billy, may be one of the most popular Young Avengers, but his codename, Wiccan, has long been a source of controversy for borrowing the name of a religion still practiced today. In recent issues of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic it becomes clear that this name will most likely stick going forward.

Wiccan first appeared in the pages of Young Avengers #1 in 2005, though we had seen him much earlier as one of the twin babies in The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #12 in 1986. Even his teammates have at times acknowledged the problematic nature of his name. It is known that in the future he will be called the all-powerful Demiurge, and since his marriage to his lifelong love, Hulkling, he has been known as Prince Consort — yet neither name has fully supplanted "Wiccan."

Whether the superhero's name will bring future conflict with the pagan community remains to be seen, but for now Marvel shows no sign of changing it — as demonstrated in Guardians of the Galaxy #16, published last month. In its pages, Hulkling and Billy help work crews rebuild the capital planet of the empire unified by Hulkling, Throneworld II, and the foreman refers to both of them as "The Hulkling and Wiccan — the Emperor and the Prince Consort…," revealing that Billy's reputation as Wiccan reaches all the way to the stars and that he is known by that name among his husband's Kree and Skrull subjects.

Both Hulkling and Wiccan have been fan favorites among the popular Young Avengers, and Billy has been even more visible since appearing in the Disney+ series WandaVision. Although Billy and his brother Tommy appear only as children, the show makes their heroic destiny unmistakably clear — not only by showing off their powers, but also by dressing Billy in his comic-book costume for Halloween. Marvel has never lost sight of the Young Avengers' enormous potential, as several of Billy's teammates have already appeared or are set to appear in upcoming MCU titles. Whether, in this run of Guardians of the Galaxy, the Scarlet Witch's son will forge a new identity remains to be seen.
